Episode #54 – The Lord’s Supper: Part 3 Forgiveness/Salvation

“For You”

  • Only Luke and Paul use the phrase concerning the bread
  • Only Luke repeats the phrase concerning the cup
  • Luke is giving Jesus’ Passion an overtly atoning significance.

“New Covenant”

  • Only Luke and Paul call the covenant “new,” Matthew and Mark have Jesus saying that the cup is “my blood of the covenant”
  • Jeremiah 31
    • New Covenant that is within them and written on their heart
    • God also promises to forgive sin
    • Luke is reinterpreting the forgiveness of sins. In the original context, God is likely promising to forget Israel’s sin by allowing them to return from exile. By doing so, God will develop a deeper relationship with Israel. Luke is reinterpreting these promises by saying that a greater fulfillment, made possible through greater forgiveness and greater access to God, has come about through Jesus.

“Release”

  • This is Luke’s word for forgiveness of sins and it is connected to Jesus’ healing ministry.
  • Luke 4:18
  • The “release” or “forgiveness” Jesus provides is not merely spiritual release from the punishments for sins but release from all impacts of sin: spiritual, physical, and social.
  • Tax collectors and sinners, Levi, Zacchaeus, the sinful woman
